Saint Dominic de Guzman wisely advised, “It is better to be the hammer than the anvil.” This metaphor extends beyond the forge; it’s a call to action for us to become active pro-creators and participants in the divine nature. To shape rather than be shaped, we must be physically, mentally, and spiritually in peak condition. True, aesthetics have their place, but they pale compared to the commandment of loving God with every facet of our being (mind, BODY, soul, and STRENGTH). When we are fit, we serve God with vigor, our service is sustained, and we are resilient against fatigue.
Our physical readiness is not solely for our benefit; it equips us to protect, provide, and participate in our faith’s sacred traditions and liturgy (e.g., standing, sitting, kneeling, and processing). Through this holistic strength, we can rise to meet the challenges and sacrifices that divine providence may place before us. Let us, therefore, strive to be robust in body and spirit, ready to answer the call to service in all its forms.
